Been thinking I need to write an updated post for my top recommendations for what to eat in San Antonio so here we are! I hope you enjoy this in-depth look at all the amazing food San Antonio has to offer! Please feel free to share with any family and friends who live in or have plans to visit San Antonio! Places marked with a * are my absolute top recommendations but you really can’t go wrong with these places!
Bakeries and Dessert;
My #1 dessert spot in San Antonio! And they just opened up a brick and mortor location off Broadway! Honestly so excited for them and their well desereved growth! Everyone we bring here says it’s the top place they crave after their vacation! My mother in law still wishes I could mail her some and it’s been two years since she was able to enjoy them! They are so yummy! Get their frozen churro, or their 5 mini churros and your choice of sauce. Must try their Honchos sauce!
Catch them every weekend at the Pearl Market! Their employees are my BFFs lol, or visit their store! Try any danishes! Our favorites are the honey butter danish, blueberry danish, and chocolate croissant. Also, try the focaccia pizza!
Incredible baked goods and sandwiches! Try their Avocado Bowl, La Clásica, Chicken Milanesa, any of their baked goods! Their downtown location is particularly charming!
Despite the name, they have the best cheesecakes and cinnamon rolls! Be sure to try their seasonal cheesecake flavors. My favorites have been their horchata, and blackberry lemon cheesecakes. Also yummy salads and sandwiches. A bit out of the way but on the way if you are heading out to Boerne Lake, my favorite swimming spot! Well worth the drive!
They have slightly odd hours and it’s best to get there close to opening as they can sell out! They may have a long wait, last we went we waited about 30 minutes, but the wait is totally worth it! Must try their corn and Oaxaca cheese sausage.
When we are short on time, or can’t make the hours at 2M, SmokeShack is our next top choice for BBQ! Bonus that they are in a very central part of town being on Broadway. Must try their mac and cheese and their brisket grilled cheese.
In a very central part of town being close to downtown but still have plenty of free parking! Lunch and dinner menus differ, lunch being mostly just sandwiches, but you can’t go wrong here! I really loved their smoked chicken salad sandwich from their lunch menu!
Not your normal tacos, they are truly Tex-Mex tacos providing some of the most unique but yummy tacos you can find! Be sure to ask for their secret menu and also ask about their taco of the month! Must try their Green Chili Queso, the Brushfire (spicy but so good!), and the Trailer Park, ask for it trashy!
Another loved Tex-Mex establishment with multiple locations around town. I have never had a bad meal here! Must try their Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Enchildas, Steak Faijtas, Big As Yo Face Burrito, and Tres Leches cake! Also be sure to ask for a side of delux jalapeno sauce to dip your chips in! That stuff is seriously addictive!
For more traditional Mexican, El Mirasol is the place! Famous for their lobster enchiladas! Their Enchiladas Soluna were my faves! I have heard great things about their Chili Relleno as well!
Looking for something greasy, cheap, quick and open late? This is it! Their steak and brisket piled high nachos are my weakness! Their quesedillas are also some of the best I have ever had! Great food, huge portions for cheap!
They have two, soon to be three locations around town and are always so busy! They are only open for breakfast and lunch but they are so yummy! Must try their chicken cilantro and alambre tacos!
One of my favorite places in the downtown area! Such a cute location and plenty of free parking! Come in the late afternoon/evening and enjoy their darling patio seating! Must try their Fire Roasted Chicken, Top Sirloin Steak, and Chocolate Sheet Cake
Not only is the food here incredible but you get to enjoy a walk through my favorite parts of downtown, The Pearl! Extra bonus, there is plenty of free parking! This area is so much fun to explore with amazing historic architecture to enjoy. They have a seasonal menu but we loved the Crab mac and cheese, jalapeno cheddar grits, pass on their steak, good but small, go with a local fish! I LOVED the red snapper.
Ok, this place is technically not in San Antonio, being about 30 minutes from town in Gruene (pronounced green like the color). Gruene is so charming and fun to explore with the famous historical Gruene Dance Hall, along the beautiful Guadalupe River. Gristmill is mostly outdoor seating so I certainly recommend coming when it’s not too hot! Be sure to try their HUGE onion rings, Texas Torpedoes, Pasta Poblano Salad, Guadalupe Chopped Steak, Chicken Acapulco, Chicken Fried Chicken. While you are in the area be sure to check out Landa Park! Such a stunning park to explore!
I am not the biggest fan of hotdogs. I never crave them. Well, until now really. This place has pretty amazing gourmet hot dogs. Try their dog of the week. It is usually a little outrageous, but we are often surprised by how yummy it is! Our faves have been their Gauc Dog, and a weekly dog that they only have sometimes the Caprese Dog. They have the best cane sugar cola too!
